<span style="color: #0b5394;"><span style="font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Polyphonic Playground was first debuted in Assemble Miami 2014, and was a huge
success. The second iteration of the project was for
Ventura Lambrate, Milan in April 2015, where this version was adapted with
integrated woven e-textiles made by Weft Lab (Dr Priti Veja). Working closely with Studio PSK and Fashion Space
Gallery, two integrated hand woven e-textile sensors were developed. The
sensors were positioned onto the outer side panels of the interactive swings, enabling musical outputs when activated by participants touching the sensor. </span></span></div>

<span lang="EN-US"><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Helvetica Neue, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The research focused on woven
e-textiles through design led and empirical investigations, combining
electronics into constructed woven structures. Priti’s research applied woven
methods to make integrated soft circuits, using her expert woven knowledge and
design led processes. Her research demonstrated design considered e-textile
outcomes through woven structural manipulations and design led methods to
amalgamate weaving and electronics as a simultaneous process. The work
investigated e-textiles materials for soft product application, (e.g. wearable
technology, smart textiles) and opportunities for e-textile manufacture. The
research also examined the design process and creative methods applied during
the stages of textile design development. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

be manipulated to make woven e-textiles with integrated electronics?' The
methodological approach taken is practice based research carried out via a
technical materials approach and creative craft methods. An investigation of
woven e-textiles through design led practice and woven expertise is presented.
Previously, woven e-textiles have been investigated either via technical
material approaches, (where the main emphasis remains on function) or via
creative craft methods, (which emphasise experimental forms, manipulate
integration methods and apply craft based knowledge). Both of these approaches
have presented only limited investigation of unobtrusive integrated electronics
in woven e-textiles, and woven structures have not been fully utilised to
support the integration. The research applies reflective practice through a
design process model; this is based on the researcher's previous weaving
expertise and designing methods. The work investigates how woven construction
may be manipulated to develop novel integrated woven e-textiles. It was found
that five woven approaches were particularly of value for electronics
integration. These were the use of double cloth, the integration of multiple
functions into the textiles as part of the weaving, the use of complex weaving
techniques to attach and integrate components, the use of inlay weft weaving
and the manipulation of floats (free floating threads). The thesis makes
original contributions to knowledge, including identification of key stages in
the woven e-textile design process, identification and application of advanced
weaving techniques to facilitate integrated woven e-textiles, and compilation
of a systematic record of woven e-‐textile techniques as a technical woven
repository. Underpinning design principles that influence the developed
e-textile outcomes are identified. A range of woven e-textile samples are
designed and made. Three specific examples including an actuator ('RGB colour
mixer'), a circuit ('corrugated pleat LED v2') and a soft module ('battery
holder module v4'), are described in detail to illustrate their development
using the e-textile design process model. The knowledge gained has potential
to be applied to industrial woven processes for e-textiles.</i><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">”</span></div>

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The first </span><a href="http://www.wearabletechnologyshow.net/" target="_blank"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Wearable Technology Conference and Expo</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> <span style="color: #0b5394;">2014, a two day event hosted in London, Olympia, saw an international WT community exhibit, demonstrate and discuss themes of WT and beyond. The conference was packed with speakers from a global platform of WT companies, computing, communications, start ups and research. Concurrent to the conference was the WT expo; a great opportunity to see and experience tangible WT products and discuss specifics with the experts. It would be great to see this part of the show expand to help disseminate and engage with the types of WT products being developed and expose potential market opportunities.</span> </span></div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">Although the divide between hard 'portable' WT and softer textiles and clothing WT still exists, the future seems promising to integrate the two areas for ultimate WT products. Examples of two possible WT development were demonstrated at the expo by Jason Bradbury and Rachel Riley from the </span><a href="http://www.channel5.com/shows/the-gadget-show" target="_blank">Gadget Show</a>. <span style="color: #0b5394;">The first product, demonstrated by Jason, was a wearable seat (worn like a belt) and on activation would unravel as a pole to sit on. The other product, demonstrated by Rachel, was a pair of energy harvesting trousers. Despite the need for further design improvements of the wearable seat, conceptually this proved to be effective and certainly integrated innovative textile technology for a flexible material to bare the weight of a person. Rachel's energy harvesting trousers were the better designed product of the two.</span></span></div>

Futures</span></a><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> conference in this (possible) series, fully dedicated to wearable
technology, innovation and future concepts was recently held at </span><a href="http://www.ravensbourne.ac.uk/"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Ravensbourne</span></a><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">, London. The event
bought together some of the most influential persons in this field, conceptual thinkers
and innovative wearable tech makers, for two full days of exposure, discussion
and debate. What seemed to be interesting was the mix of interdisciplinary
professions all immersed in this one related field of ‘wearable futures’ – highlighting
the importance of collaborative works and the need to share and push knowledge
beyond single discipline platforms. This was a point raised in a few of the
discussions, emphasising the potential of wearable technologies if more
collaborative practices were initiated, committed to and continued to advance. Some
of these practices that proved to thrive from such interdisciplinary working
relationships showcased some exciting works. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The skill of making alongside technology was another point
that reiterated amongst discussions, particularly with ‘softer’ wearables. To truly
integrated technology and digital capabilities into garments or soft goods, an
essential understanding of making and construction can only enhance this
prospect. Hearing of innovative projects raised much interest such as the </span><a href="http://www.technologyreview.com/lists/innovators-under-35/2013/pioneer/kuniharu-takei/"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">digital

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">A recent visit to the <a href="http://designmuseum.org/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #999999;">Design Museum's</span></a> current exhibition</span><a href="http://designmuseum.org/exhibitions/2013/the-future-is-here" target="_blank"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> 'The Future Is Here'</span></a><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"> focuses on design, new materials and manufacturing technologies; highlighting some of the most recent and exciting innovations in what some are claiming to be a new industrial revolution. Entering the exhibit introduces a historical context of past industrial manufacturing right up to the present day. Alongside this runs a live modern making factory displaying some of the most up to date and innovative making processes, with shelves of example artifacts produced on display for visitor interaction. 3D-printing, laser cutting/ etching and CAD modelling were a few active processes drawing in an engaged audience in awe. </span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Amongst the main display of products were 3D-printed implantable skull plates, robotic manufacturing, hackable products, open source platforms, computing hardware and material processes to name a few. What was most exciting for Weft Lab to view was Philippa Brock's jacquard woven fabrics, using on loom finishing techniques to produce 3D textiles. Combining traditional textile manufacturing with technologically advanced capabilities demonstrates the potential of this relationship for new possibilities. Textiles are one of the oldest forms of material production and the exhibition re-confirms its constant position as a novel making method alongside new evolving practicies. The possibilities of combining design, making, technology and manufacturing is proving to push boundaries and open new exploratory levels of design.</span><br />

A truly unique and inspiring four days with an incredible group of creative individuals, including Royal Designers for Industry, young designers and a handful of 'wildcard' participants. An experience that provoked and unravelled new depths of creative thinking with dynamic analytical perspectives. Undoubtedly, an experience that will always impact our work going forward. <span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Five full days of packed e-textiles thinking, doing, making, talking and sharing amongst some of the most enthused and involved e-textile practitioners/ artists/ designers/ researchers and techies. The theme for this year's event was based on 'soft and slow e-textiles', where the focus was on making processes involving time intensive craft methods and hand making in collaboration with new technologies.</span><span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">The working space and local environment was perfect for such an event and could not have been more apt as was far removed from modern lifestyles and ubiquitous communications.</span> </span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">As a means of introduction all the participants gave a five minute presentation of their work in pecha-kucha style over our first group dinner. It was quite overwhelming to know that everyone in the room shared the same interests in e-textiles and there was a positive understanding, acceptance and appreciation of the type of work being executed by all.</span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">Two further days were filled with e-textile workshop activities and skill sharing. Pre-selected participants organised and led these workshops to disseminate their specific skill set and share their knowledge. Participants taking part in the workshops were able to learn skills such as Arduino programming, heatable e-textile circuits, 3D printing for e-textiles, vinyl cutting, fibre optic weaving, thermochromic screen-printing, copper batik e-textiles, conductive lace making, e-textiles touch pad surfaces to name a few! It was quite a rare opportunity to have such a diverse range of expertise all in one place with the openness to teach and learn from one another.</span> </span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #0b5394;"><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">After exploring a range of e-textile techniques </span><span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">and some lengthy discussions about the processes of these methods and brainstorming future potential applications of such materials, the participants were given an opportunity for group projects. Based on the topics of discussions and new ideas thought about since, several group project concepts evolved; including a 'power generating e-textiles', 'magic e-textile carpet', a 'tree loom', a 'live global e-textile swatch book' and 'underwater e-textiles hats' were some of the inventions pursued.</span></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;"><a name='more'></a></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">Weft-Lab was happy to be part of the 'tree loom' project that integrated on site trees and the outside surroundings with two interweaving hoop warps made of fibre optics, monofilament and paper yarn. Two days of work, a lot of patience later and in the dark of the evening we had an active structure that other viewers were able to participate with weft weaving. A great group collaboration (many thanks to Celine, Pauline, Isabel, Sarah T. and Beam).</span><br />

<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial;"><span style="color: #0b5394;">The event was a great success and a unique opportunity to have such a wealth of knowledge in the specific domain of e-textiles all in one place. It was great to have the annual conferences in Europe.Key note speakers included Prof. Elias Siores (University of Bolton) who delivered an insightful presentation on 'Smart Materials in Energy Conversion for Technical Textiles Systems and devices'.<span style="font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: small;"> </span></span></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;"></span><br />
<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: Arial;">Both conferences were concurrently run with an array of speakers, demos and novel research; overall an extremely informative and exciting range of projects presented. Weft Lab also presented papers during the adjunct conference which were received with praise. One of the most exciting parts of ISWC was the design exhibition that showcased a number of active prototypes from international researchers, all integrating wearable technologies into their concepts. The winner of the design showcase was the 'Flutter dress' by Halley P. Profita, Nicolas Farrow and Prof. Nikolaus Correll from University Colorado. The dress gives users with hearing impairments vibrotactile sensory inputs from loud alarms or emergency sounds to help alert the user to their environmental surroundings. </span><br />

An insightful introduction into the work of will.i.am, that expands from initial routes in music to fashion, business, design, consulting on conceptual thinking and lots more beyond (and that's just what he had time to talk about!). Many other stories of Will's journey from his humble beginnings to his interest in innovation, particularly within the technology domain were quite entertaining to listen to. The highlight of the night was to hear when asked what Will thinks will be the design of the future, to which he responded would be wearable technology with gestural interfaces. We look forward to that will.i.am project!</span><br />

A great day full of inspirational speakers. Keynote speaker Caryn Franklin, fashion commentator, presented key concepts from the project <span style="color: #999999;">'</span></span><a href="http://allwalks.org/"><span style="color: #999999; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">AllWalks</span></a><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue", Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><span style="color: #999999;">' </span>highlighting the significance of inclusivity, individuality and diversity particularly within the fashion industry to represent a real and diverse population. The second keynote presentation, delivered by Ken Blakeslee from <a href="http://webmobility.com/index.html"><span style="color: #999999;">Web Mobility Ventures</span></a>, titled 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' over-viewed a visual history of some of the great (and also the not so great) wearable technologies and also questioned the challenges, future directions and technology as an enabler for mobility.</span><br />

PFO says its mission is "to make the world better and safer for women" but many parties will find this overt connection between a woman's safety and what she does, or does not, wear a highly contentious issue.</span></div>weft-labhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17818847762094877993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4112447161371228909.post-28245128715170186762012-03-14T17:15:00.000+00:002012-03-14T17:15:14.849+00:00Arduino-know-know-know<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2grBHkQLjXrovHo-wy7_MWJZ-65jppYkEf1pAGGVfN9Vm79bj0gePEn7WbbhrXHRC3aQr-AE57JAsm8sFpIb71JBkeUuYg-z8q_6Lr9C45PDr-CnsVbwvxniZBNkdtpvhN6Kgb19rWFA/s1600/arduinoday.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi2grBHkQLjXrovHo-wy7_MWJZ-65jppYkEf1pAGGVfN9Vm79bj0gePEn7WbbhrXHRC3aQr-AE57JAsm8sFpIb71JBkeUuYg-z8q_6Lr9C45PDr-CnsVbwvxniZBNkdtpvhN6Kgb19rWFA/s1600/arduinoday.jpg" /></a></div><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:WordDocument> <w:View>Normal</w:View> <w:Zoom>0</w:Zoom> <w:TrackMoves/> <w:TrackFormatting/> <w:PunctuationKerning/> <w:ValidateAgainstSchemas/> <w:SaveIfXMLInvalid>false</w:SaveIfXMLInvalid> <w:IgnoreMixedContent>false</w:IgnoreMixedContent> <w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText>false</w:AlwaysShowPlaceholderText> <w:DoNotPromoteQF/> <w:LidThemeOther>EN-GB</w:LidThemeOther> <w:LidThemeAsian>X-NONE</w:LidThemeAsian> <w:LidThemeComplexScript>X-NONE</w:LidThemeComplexScript> <w:Compatibility> <w:BreakWrappedTables/> <w:SnapToGridInCell/> <w:WrapTextWithPunct/> <w:UseAsianBreakRules/> <w:DontGrowAutofit/> <w:SplitPgBreakAndParaMark/> <w:DontVertAlignCellWithSp/> <w:DontBreakConstrainedForcedTables/> <w:DontVertAlignInTxbx/> <w:Word11KerningPairs/> <w:CachedColBalance/> </w:Compatibility> <m:mathPr> <m:mathFont m:val="Cambria Math"/> <m:brkBin m:val="before"/> <m:brkBinSub m:val="--"/> <m:smallFrac m:val="off"/> <m:dispDef/> <m:lMargin m:val="0"/> <m:rMargin m:val="0"/> <m:defJc m:val="centerGroup"/> <m:wrapIndent m:val="1440"/> <m:intLim m:val="subSup"/> <m:naryLim m:val="undOvr"/> </m:mathPr></w:WordDocument> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> <w:LatentStyles DefLockedState="false" DefUnhideWhenUsed="true"

<div class="MsoNormal" style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">Recently we were lucky enough to delve into the world of <a href="http://www.arduino.cc/">Arduino</a> programming, through a self organised hack and play session and a little help from <a href="http://jamesleitch.wordpress.com/">James Leitch</a> - Product Designer & recent graduate from Ravensbourne. <span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>As daunting as this seemed at first, it was quite an enjoyable day full of ‘pins’, blinking lights, electronic components and chocolate biscuits! This was a really good introduction to Arduino that has opened a multitude of possibilities for e-textiles and wearable technology.</div><div class="MsoNormal"><br />

<span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: small;"><a href="http://rca.academia.edu/GlennAdamson/Books">Glenn Adamson</a> asked some philosophical questions of curator <a href="http://danielcharny.com/">Daniel Charney</a> at the Power of Making symposium (see above). However, the symposium, like the <a href="http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/p/powerofmaking/">exhibition </a>of the same name (which was an exhibition of made things in a museum of... made things), for me at least, seemed to miss the point. The power of making lies surely with the people who make, not in the made artefacts. The power is being skilled, owning a skill and being able to apply it; being productive, being able to add value or meaning (even if just subjective) to a raw material</span><span style="color: #0b5394; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;">. Because whether or not you would give a 10ft Gorilla made of coathangers a place in your front room, you can still admire the patience and skill that combined to realise the idea. An interesting differential then between 'making' and 'designing'.</span>weft-labhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17818847762094877993noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4112447161371228909.post-65118049519852586652011-10-30T16:02:00.001+00:002011-10-30T16:53:31.055+00:00..while I looked around for my EPoSSibilities...<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNk5oh7hNfl9jvXzaoVY0WLzATNg5IsdZQoE5nKFxNwnSqe0H6AbCvZPJdFCrRf4VVtcY1s0HZZG6dQKG1RHMAPa-Jllpx0JcxFhdKhdoXZAYUunG2ULpJUfm7TAj0uextO4VHFrLPTQU/s1600/EPoSS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNk5oh7hNfl9jvXzaoVY0WLzATNg5IsdZQoE5nKFxNwnSqe0H6AbCvZPJdFCrRf4VVtcY1s0HZZG6dQKG1RHMAPa-Jllpx0JcxFhdKhdoXZAYUunG2ULpJUfm7TAj0uextO4VHFrLPTQU/s1600/EPoSS.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Seasons do change with the scenery; especially when the scenery of London becomes that of the<span style="color: #999999;"> </span><a href="http://www.smart-systems-integration.org/" style="color: #999999;">European Technology Platform on Smart Systems Integration</a> (EPoSS) Annual Forum which took place in Barcelona at the beginning of October. </span></div><div style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;">Weft-lab's summer was extended by a few more days while we gave presentations at both the annual forum and the proposers' day, all held at the impressive Cosmo Caixa Science Museum. We look forward to the possibility of some weft-lab involvement in future collaborative European funding bids. </span></div><div style="color: #3d85c6; font-family: "Helvetica Neue",Arial,Helvetica,sans-serif;"><span style="font-size: small;"><br />
